I was completely shocked, like the rest of you, I am sure, when I heard the tragic news about Whitney Houston on Saturday. My plans for the evening were immediately cancelled as I spent the next couple of hours watching the news and surfing the internet to watch her videos. I won’t go into the issues surrounding her death or the troubles she seemed to fight for so many years. More and more of that will be debated as the cause of her death is discovered. No, I choose to remember the Whitney of my youth.
You see, when her first album (they were called that back then) came out, I was 13 with a big obsession for MTV (when they actually showed videos). Whitney was amazing – absolutely gorgeous with a voice that was second to none. I spent many hours with my “hair brush” microphone singing into the mirror trying to sound like her. I LOVED everything about her – couldn’t get enough of her. My favorite song of her through my youth, hands down, “How will I Know.” I recorded that video on my VCR and played it endlessly. BTW, she filmed that video while sick with the flu, a fact that I still remember to this day.
For my fourteenth birthday, my dad took myself and 3 other friends to see her at Chastain Park. We sat in the pit at a table (how floor seats work at Chastain) and sang, giggled, screamed all night. At one quiet moment in-between songs, we yelled in unison “WE LOVE YOU, WHITNEY!” She put her hand up to her eyes, scanned the audience, gave a sweet sign and responded…”I love you, too!” One of the best moments of my youth and I will never forget it.
